A few years ago, I learned the Tony Robbins Priming Exercise at Tony’s 4-day Unleash The Power Within seminar.
The Tony Robbins Priming Exercise is a 10-15 minute routine that can be used to start your morning off in a proactive (rather than reactive) way.
In this article, I’m going to explain in detail how you can use the priming exercise to enhance your life.
Tony Robbins Priming Exercise – Be Proactive
Tony Robbins says most people start their mornings off in a reactive mode. They answer email, check Facebook, etc., and then start responding (reacting) to things.
I used to do this.
For a long time, I would wake up and respond to emails and text messages, and start my day by reacting to people’s requests of me and my time.
The key to more productivity, happiness, health, balance, and fulfillment, is to have a proactive morning routine.
The Tony Robbins Priming Exercise is based upon this principle.
When you start your morning off with a powerful morning success routine, where you increase your health in body, mind, and spirit, life really takes off!
I have tried many different morning success rituals, and priming is one of my favorites.
Tony Robbins Priming Exercise – How Tony does it
Tony Robbins starts his day doing a cold water plunge. He submerges his body into freezing cold water that is 57 degrees Fahrenheit. (For people without this luxury, you can take a freezing cold shower)
After that, he does a breathing and visualization exercise.
Tony Robbins does three sets of 30 Kapalabhati Pranayama breaths, which is an ancient yoga exercise.
After he performs three sets of special breathing and arm movements above his head, he begins slow belly breathing, while beginning to visualize in three segments, which all last around three minutes.
Tony Robbins Priming Exercise visualizations:
- Gratitude – Think about a few things you are grateful for. Make sure to incorporate small things such as the beauty of a smile, and something big like a major achievement.
- Strengthen/Heal/Resolve – Feel your organs, body, mind, friends, family, and people of the world all strengthening, healing, and resolving any issues within them.
- Goals – Imagine three outcomes you want to accomplish, and see them as already done.
Priming in Psychology
Priming is an implicit memory effect in which exposure to one stimulus (i.e., perceptual pattern) influences the response to another stimulus.
It refers to activating particular representations or associations in memory just before carrying out an action or task.
Priming is an acuteness to stimuli because of exposure to a certain event or experience.
For example, an individual who has just purchased a new car may now start to notice with more frequency other people driving her same make and model.
This person has been primed to recognize more readily a car like hers because of the experience she has driving and owning one.
You may like to think you’re in control of everything you do. In some sense you are, but you’re also subtly influenced by your environment and circumstances without even realizing it.
We are literally primed all day ever day and most people have no idea that priming is taking place.
Here is just one of the many ways priming works:
- If you have recently seen or heard the word eat, you are temporarily more likely to fill in so_p as soup rather than soap.
- In this case, the word eat primes the word or idea of soup.
Images can prime us too.
In a study, psychologist Kathleen Vohs used various methods to prime participants subconsciously to think about money, one of which was having them walk by a computer showing a screensaver of dollar bills.
After being primed to think about money, the subjects showed an increase in independence, and a decrease in willingness to help someone in need.
Tony Robbins Priming Exercise – Prime Yourself for Success
Now you understand more deeply why the Tony Robbins Priming Exercise is so awesome. Instead of being primed by your environment, first thing upon waking, you prime yourself for success.
All of the visualizing helps prime you for happiness, productivity, success, fulfillment, and general feelings of gratitude and well-being.
